The Southeastern Conference (SEC) is releasing a final version of its new media policy. Sports fans everywhere are hoping for some significant changes from the current version, because at the moment, itincludes a blatant ban on usage of all social networking sites during games.
The conference informed its schools of the new policy earlier this month, which reads: “Ticketed fans can’t produce or disseminate (or aid in producing or disseminating) any material or information about the Event, including, but not limited to, any account, description, picture, video, audio, reproduction or other information concerning the Event.”
That translates to no Twitter, Facebook or YouTube, or any other service that could in any way compete with authorized media coverage of the event. In this case, authorized media coverage rights belong to CBS, who has a $3 billion deal with the conference over the next 15 years. It’s understandable that the SEC wants to protect the value of the CBS contract, but banning all social media seems not only a little absurd, but also counter-productive and completely unenforceable.
At the moment, the policies seem a lot more grounded in fear than reality. Social media devoted to your company should be viewed as a compliment, but at the moment, it seems that’s anything but how it’s being perceived. Courtesy of mashable.com
